Excerpt from Chapter 9:

They walked slowly, hand in hand, in the twilight. The town was quiet, as if asleep for the night, already. Only the occasional barking of a dog, in the distance, broke the silence. David held Maggie’s arm securely, helping her down the riverbank to the path that ran along the water’s edge. This location was Maggie’s special place; it was a place of fantasies and daydreams; it was a secluded trail leading to her secret sanctuary. They headed toward the destination --- the private retreat. It was a quiet place hidden by low hanging willow branches, carpeted with cool thick grass, and surrounded by high banks covered with honeysuckle.

Maggie reached out and moved the willow branch aside; she was anxious to enter her fanciful kingdom. She froze. “Someone’s in here,” she whispered back to David.

David stepped through the opening in front of Maggie, and peered into the enclosure. He immediately grabbed the girl’s hand and yanked her back out and onto the path. “Come on Maggie,” he said, quietly, “you don’t need to see that.”

“What were they doing?” Maggie asked innocently. She pulled back, trying to see.

“He’s kissing her.”

“That’s not what it looked like.”

“Come on, Maggie… Let’s go home.”

“David! They weren't kissing! I want to see!” she whispered defiantly.

“Why do you care what two lovers are doing in a private place like this? If they wanted people to see them, they wouldn’t have come here!”

“Because I can’t believe what I saw! I just want to look one more time… Maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me… in the shadows. And David... they weren't making love! I can't believe.......”

“Maggie! Your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you. You saw exactly what you think you saw.” David couldn’t help laughing --- He hoped the couple hadn’t heard him; and he didn’t want them to know he and Maggie were discussing their private tryst; and he certainly didn’t want to disturb them.

“David, please… Just let me peek!” Maggie pleaded. She pulled harder.

David knew, full well, he would be in for another intense round of inquisitions if he allowed Maggie to spy on the couple. But he also knew she would continue to badger him if he didn’t. He reluctantly released his hold on her, and she immediately disappeared into the lair.

David waited patiently outside, on the path. Moments passed. Suddenly, to his dismay, David heard a female softly squealing in delight, and the squeals soon escalated into screams of pleasure. He knew the sound too well --- and he also knew it wasn’t Maggie screaming. At this point, David realized the trouble he would be in, when Maggie started her questioning. She would invariably confront him about what she had witnessed. His mind was racing, trying to devise answers to unasked questions. He held his breath, knowing that any minute he was going to have to face Maggie’s interrogation.

Maggie flew out of the enclosure, running into the doctor, and nearly knocking him down. Her eyes were the size of saucers, and her mouth was wide open. She was trying to speak, but her voice refused to cooperate. David took her by the hand, and literally dragged her back down the path to the riverbank, where they climbed up to the street, and stopped.

“Well, Maggie? Are you satisfied, now?” David shook his head in exasperation. “I told you… That wasn’t something you needed to see!”

“I… I can’t… I just can’t… Oh… I didn’t… David!!”

“Is that right?” David laughed at Maggie, as she continued to stutter and stammer. “I’m glad to see you’re expressing yourself so well!”

“You… You… I… I just… You knew!”

“Yes I did.” David began laughing so hard he could barely stand.

“Oh… Oh my! They were… he… he was… She…”

“Yes, Maggie… They certainly were.” Big tears were running down David’s face from laughing so hard. “The bottom line is… did they enjoy themselves, Maggie?”

Maggie shook her head enthusiastically -- yes. She had given up trying to speak.

David finally regained his composure. He wiped at his eyes with his handkerchief, and grinned at Maggie. “Let’s go home and have a glass of that wine. I’m worn out, Maggie.” He put his arm around the girl’s shoulders, and steered her toward her home.

David poured the wine into the cups and handed one to Maggie. They both sat down at the table and stared at each other in silence. David was waiting for it to start. Maggie didn’t say a word. The questions were there in her eyes, but hadn’t reached her lips.

“Well, honey… Aren’t you going to drink your wine?” he asked. David took a long drink from his cup, peering at the girl over the rim.

Maggie took a sip. Then she gulped the entire cup down, and filled the cup again.

“No… No… Maggie! Don’t overdo it, honey… You’ll get sick.”

“It’s good.”

“Too much of a good thing is never actually good.” David took another drink of his wine. “I’m glad to see you can speak, now.” He shook his head, remembering her quandary, and he chuckled. “Sometimes I wonder… Will you ever listen to me? Just trust me when I tell you something isn’t good for you?”

“Are we talking about the wine?”

“Not only the wine,” David said.

The silence that followed was intriguing. A myriad of expressions subtly crossed Maggie's face as she sat there so quietly.

David leaned back in his chair, anticipating the next round of Maggie's incessant curiosity and questioning. He took a deep breath and tried to relax. He untied the ribbon that bound his long dark hair at the back of his neck. He shook his hair free and grinned across the table at Maggie.

Maggie’s eyes widened. She had never, in all the time she had known the doctor, seen him without his hair neatly tied back. He looked untamed, wild and exciting. His dark eyes were accentuated by the black mane falling across his forehead, around his face, and over his broad shoulders. His lips looked fuller --- His jaw more defined --- His facial features more prominent. Maggie poured herself another cup of wine, and filled David’s cup. She continued to stare at him as she drank it.

“Maggie, I think it’s awfully warm in here... or maybe it's the wine.” David stood up and pulled off his shirt --- up over his head in a single effortless action.

Maggie’s surprise was palpable, and her cheeks immediately flushed bright pink.

David just stood there, studying Maggie’s reaction.

“Um… David… What were we talking about?” Maggie squirmed in her chair, and took another long drink of the wine. David’s inquisitive gaze made her uneasy. She could feel little beads of perspiration breaking out across her forehead. Still, she couldn’t take her eyes off him. Golden, rock-hard muscles protruded on his arms, and stood out across his bare chest and abdomen; his body glistened in the muted light. He was a dark wild thing -- exuding raw sensuality and emanating an inaudible primal groaning.

“We were talking about excesses.” David finished the wine in his cup. He continued to watch Maggie.

“David, I just have to tell you… You are a very handsome man. I’m sorry. I just have to say it.” Maggie fidgeted in her chair. “I’ve never seen you with your hair loose like that. It makes you look completely different… Like a stranger. It scares me a little.”

“I scare you?”

“Yes.”

“Would you feel better if I tie it back the way it was?”

“Maybe…”

“That’s silly Maggie! So you think looks define the person?”

“Now you’re confusing me.” Maggie wiped her brow with her apron.

“I’m sorry, honey. I promise you… I’m ME. Nothing about the real me changed, just because I let my hair down.” David grinned and winked at Maggie.

Maggie stood up and walked over to David. She gathered his hair into her hands, running her fingers down through it. She was surprised at how heavy and glossy it was.

“I love it!” she said. “I wish you never had to tie it back!” She pulled a handful of it up to her nose, and breathed in the scent of him. “Oh God… I really do love it!” She exhaled the words; her voice sounded low and hoarse.

Something was happening to her senses. David allowed her to continue her musing. He had adroitly set the ambiance for the culmination of his attempt to dominate Maggie’s will -- spiritually AND carnally.
