Excerpt from Chapter 12:

The weekly card game at Slagor’s Tavern in Zanesville was wrapping up. The men
counted their coins and determined, on this particular evening, Silas McGregor was the winner.
Silas bought everyone one more drink for the road while he bragged about his winnings.

“I’d give it all back for one more peek down Maggie Waters’ bodice,” he snickered.
“Yep, she and the doc, here, fixed my foot up right good… but just looking at that little girl’s
endowments… if you know what I mean… made me feel like a new man.”

Silas had been ranting about Maggie Waters all evening. David Deihl could barely
control his temper, although he forced himself to laugh along with the other men, when Silas
McGregor made those slanderous remarks about Maggie. The doctor’s blood was boiling with
rage as he threw on his coat and grabbed his hat to leave.

“Good night gentlemen,” David said coolly. “Good night, Daisy, my sweet,” he winked
at the bar maid.

The rest of the group soon left the tavern. The snow was coming down heavily, and a
stout breeze was blowing in from the west. The streets were empty in the little town, and all was
quiet.

Silas McGregor hummed a tune as he turned his mule down Harvey’s Path and headed
into the pitch-dark ravine. Suddenly, he was savagely yanked off the mule’s back, and he barely
felt the razor-sharp knife, swiftly and smoothly severing his neck. He was aware of someone
rummaging through his pockets, but he was unable to speak as the blood gurgled and gushed
from his throat. He lay helpless in the snow, waiting for the end, so slow in coming. He
marveled in amusement that his very last thoughts were of the hogs he’d butchered during his
lifetime. So, it seems, they didn’t suffer much at all. He smiled at the thought, closed his eyes,
and surrendered to death.
